Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Suburban Corridor Hits 45% Physical Progress Milestone
Mumbai, May 2026 - The much-awaited Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Suburban Corridor, a key railway infrastructure project in Mumbai, has achieved a significant milestone with 45% physical progress.

- Executing Agency: Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC)
- Aims: Provide direct rail link between Central Railway and Trans-Harbour suburban networks
- Expected Benefits: Improved operational flexibility, reduced congestion, and faster travel for lakhs of daily commuters
Project Phases
MRVC has completed Phase-I of the project, which involved development of the new Digha Gaon suburban station and associated railway infrastructure works.
- Phase-I Completed: Development of Digha Gaon station and associated railway infrastructure works
- Key Works: Construction of Bridges No. 36/4 and 36/5 and launching of girders for both Up and Down lines at the Mukund Road Road Under Bridge
- Phase-II Approvals: Major project approvals, Engineering Scale Plans (ESPs), and General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) obtained
Rehabilitation Challenges
The project requires acquisition of 2.40 hectares of land, including 1.87 hectares of government land and 0.53 hectares of private land. Rehabilitation of hundreds of project-affected households continues to be a major challenge.
- Rehabilitation Tenements: 868 tenements earmarked at Balkum in Thane
- Completed Rehabilitation: 82 project-affected households (PAHs), including 75 residential units and seven common property resources
- Stalled Rehabilitation: Remaining 436 affected households in Shivaji Nagar due to resistance from residents
MRVC's Plan to Resolve Issues
MRVC is working closely with stakeholders and the Government of Maharashtra to resolve the issues and complete the rehabilitation process at the earliest.

Project Timeline
MRVC has targeted completion of the project within 36 months after the land acquisition and rehabilitation process is completed.
The Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Corridor will create an important new suburban rail link and strengthen connectivity between Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Mumbai's wider suburban rail network.
