Kerala High Court Informed of Steady Progress in Sabari Rail Project

The Kerala High Court has been updated by the Railways and the State government regarding the Sabari rail project. In response to a 2019 petition, the Railways and State government have provided an update on the project's progress.

Background of the Petition

A petition was filed in 2019 by Jijo Joseph, secretary of the Sabari Railway Central Action Council, requesting the court to take steps to acquire land for the Sabari rail project and complete it as soon as possible. The proposed project aims to connect Angamaly and Erumeli.

Update from the Railways

In its affidavit, the Railways have informed the court that the Centre has decided to de-freeze the rail project. This decision is a significant step forward in the project's implementation.

State Government's Role

  • The State government has expressed its willingness to share half the total project cost, amounting to ₹1,900 crore.
  • Financial assistance from KIIFB will also be provided to support the project.
  • The State has already initiated preparatory works for land acquisition.

Directions Issued by the Government

The Revenue department has been directed to expedite land acquisition proceedings in accordance with the approved alignment in Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki districts.

The department has also been instructed to complete the land acquisition proceedings and publish the statutory notifications in a timely manner.
